Frequently asked questions.
1. How long do sessions go for?
Sessions usually run for 1 hour to 1.5 hours.
2. How long have you been training dogs?
I’ve been training dogs since 2016 and studying dog behaviour and psychology since 2011.
3. Do you come to me, or do I bring my dog to you?
It depends on your dog’s needs.
If your dog has severe behavioural issues, our Board and Train program is usually best, as it provides more intensive training over a longer period.
If the issues are mild and you’re comfortable working with your dog at home, I can run in-home sessions with both you and your dog.
4. How long will it take for my dog to be fully trained?
This depends on you as the owner.
The more patient and consistent you are with the training methods and rules you learn from Mikey, the faster you’ll see results.
You’ll notice immediate changes during sessions, but lasting improvement comes from following the training consistently at home.
5. Do you only work with certain breeds?
No. I work with dogs of all breeds, sizes, and ages.
6. Is my dog too old to train? Are they set in their ways?
Younger dogs usually learn faster, but no dog is ever too old to learn new behaviours.
Dogs live in the moment and can adapt at any age when trained the right way.
That’s why no dog is ever too old to be rehomed or rescued. Training works the same way.
7. Do you have group classes?
Yes. We run classes for puppies, adults, and reactive or unsocial dogs.
8. What other services do you offer?
Because we’re based on a farm, we run socialisation programs with other animals like sheep, cows, horses, alpacas, chickens and goats. These help dogs learn to stay calm and respectful around all animals.
We also offer sheep herding sessions for herding breeds, which are great for mental stimulation.
9. What training methods do you use?
We use balanced dog training. Which is a combination between positive reinforcment and negative reinforcment training. We communicate with dogs in a way that they understand and is most natural to them. Mikey has studied dog psychology and behaviour exstensively since 2011 and he is a big believer in using body language and energy, to communicate with dogs, as this is the way that they communicate with eachother.
10. What should I bring to a session?
Bring your dog’s favourite treats, a lead, any tools that you might use with your dogl, and an open mind.
11. Do you offer ongoing support after training?
Yes, we at Geelong’s Dog Whisperer, offer ongoing support for the remainder of your dog’s life. We believe in creating a community where we can help eachother, oppose to a business, where we exchange transactions.
12. Can you help with aggression or anxiety?
We specialise in agression and anxiety, and Mikey has worked with many cases of the years of dogs that would be classsified as red-zone agressive cases. Which means that the dogs wanted to cause great harm to humans, or other animals.
13. Are you certified or qualified?
Mikey has been studying dog psycology and dog behaviour since 2011, by reading books on dog psycology and dog behaviour, taking part in dog training corses, by trainers that he admires such as Beckman’s coaching program by Joel Beckman and Cesars Way by Cesar Millan. Mikey’s goal is to enroll in one of Cesar’s in person training programs in California, where he will be training with Cesar Millan himself. He will also be doing an online course with Garret Wing, founder of American Standard K9.
14. What areas do you service?
Geelong and it’s outskirts. Depending how far away your from the Geelong CBD, you may be charged for travel. Although this can be discussed during your free consultation.
15. Do you offer payment plans or packages?
We offer packages, and offer payment plans if needed.
16. What is your cancellation policy?
Clients have 48 before their consultation, to cancel without penalty fees.
17. Can I watch the training sessions?
It is encouraged for owners to be present during every training session. Mikey doesn’t technically train your dog, he is technically training you, with better communicating with your dog. This exludes board and trains, as your will be temporarily staying at Mikey’s dog training centre, where he will be closely working 1 on 1 with your dog. This will be offered to you, if Mikey believes your dog has higher needs in its rehabilitation.
18. Do you train other animals?
Since you have a farm setup, you could mention whether you offer basic training or socialisation for livestock or other pets.
